New research shows that common vinegar turns on genes in mice that help fight obesity. Vinegar contains a fat-fighting ingredient, acetic acid, which researchers say can control both blood pressure and blood sugar.

Japanese researchers gave acetic acid or water to mice fed high-fat diets. Findings revealed that the mice given acetic acid developed 10 percent less body fat than mice only drinking water.

While this study was done with rodents and not on humans, researchers believe that vinegar may have a similar effect on people.
