Thursday, June 27, marks National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) 2019. This year’s theme, “Doing It My Way,” is the same as last year’s and highlights the many ways people can make HIV testing a part of their lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the theme also plays into the CDC’s larger #DoingItMyWay campaign. As that campaign notes, with so many ways to get tested for HIV—at home, at the doctor’s office, with a friend—finding the one that’s right for you should be easy.

The campaign encourages people to share their preferred testing methods on social media using the hashtags DoingItMyWay, #HIVTestingDay #NHTD and, in Spanish, #HaciéndoloAMiManera #DíaNacionalDeLaPruebaDelVIH. (Sample posts from Instgram appear throughout this article.)

The CDC site also includes sharable graphics and sample texts.

You can locate testing events on the CDC’s NHTD site here.

About 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States, according to the CDC, and one in seven don’t know their status. It’s important to know whether you have HIV, not only for your own sake—because lifesaving meds can help you enjoy a healthy and productive life—but also because people with HIV who take meds and maintain an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus to others sexually.
