In an effort to improve the quality of care at hospitals around the country, federal health officials on Friday, March 28 released a new version of a website that allows people to compare and contrast about 2,500 hospitals.

The site (hospitalcompare.hhs.gov) aims to allow the public to “shop” for hospitals—hence forcing the hospitals to compete on quality. By visiting the site, you can learn how your hospital stacks up on various performance measures, including surgery successes, heart failure among patients and information about various patient infection rates.

The site also contains information from surveys taken by Medicare patients.
