Antidepressants Zoloft and Cipralex came out on top in a recent study that suggests they are slightly better than 10 other competing drugs. The authors suggested that these two drugs should be the first choice for patients with moderate to severe depression.

Though the study’s lead author, Andrea Cipriani, MD from the University of Verona in Italy, acknowledges that all the antidepressants were effective and  there wasn’t much difference between them, Zoloft and Cipralex were indicated as the best options when considering cost, benefits and side effects, such as sleeplessness, sexual dysfunction and nausea.

Note: The study was paid for by study authors’ academic institutions. Cipriani did not receive any grants from pharmaceutical companies, but several of his co-authors received funding from various makers of antidepressants.
