Mississippi school districts have two new alternatives to abstinence-only sex education, the Jackson Free Press reports. The state’s Department of Education has approved two abstinence-plus programs—sex-ed programs that encourage abstinence while also teaching about condoms and contraception. Draw the Line/Respect the Line is aimed at grades 6 to 8. Reducing the Risk targets high school students. A federal grant covers both programs, allowing schools to use them at no cost. By law, abstinence-plus programs in Mississippi can’t show students how to use condoms, so instead of giving the demonstrations included in comprehensive sex-ed courses, the Reducing the Risk program offers a lecture on the topic.
