New York State Senator Tom Duane, who is openly gay and HIV positive, will not seek reelection, The New York Times reports. Duane, a Democrat, has represented the 29th Senate District in Manhattan—which stretches from the Upper West Side to Greenwich Village and across to the East Village—since 1999. Some of his many achievements include closing loopholes for people trying to avoid child- and spousal-support payments; requiring health insurance plans to cover treatment for mental illness; adding sexual orientation to the list of protected categories in state laws; improving medical and mental health care for prisoners; and creating affordable housing protection for HIV-positive New Yorkers and their families.
