Slight Increase in People Working Out

The good news: Americans are exercising more. A recent survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that from 2001 to 2005, the number of women who said they exercised regularly rose from 43 percent to 46.7 percent; the number of men who said the same thing rose from 46 percent to 49.6 percent.

The bad news: African-American women ranked last with only 36 percent making the grade. Also, the CDC states that despite this increase, we are still are not meeting the federal guidelines: at least 30 minutes per day of moderate activity at least five days per week or at least 20 minutes per day of vigorous activity at least three days per week.

Tip: Staying active does not require an expensive gym membership or running a million miles a week. Just a half an hour per day of walking can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. Try splitting that up into 15 minute increments: Once in the morning and during lunch fufills your health quota!
