Stay Hydrated

Despite what you’ve heard, there is no magic number when it comes to individual hydration, but eight glasses a day is a good place to start. Water is essential for all of your body’s functions, and because your body loses fluids through sweat, you can easily become dehydrated when it’s extremely hot. Individuals older than 50 or who are overweight should be extra cautious. Here are some tips to keep in mind when the temperature starts to rise.

  • Drink more water than usual. Carry a large water bottle with you wherever you go, so you never have far to reach for a sip.
  • Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids (you may already be dehydrated).
  • Drink two to four cups of water every hour during outdoor activities.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine or liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
