Monday, November 14, is World Diabetes Day. “Diabetes Education and Prevention” is the theme for 2009 to 2013. November 14 marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who in 1922 was one of the key discoverers of insulin, which is still used to treat people with diabetes. The goal is to raise global awareness of diabetes and engage people worldwide in diabetes advocacy. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched World Diabetes Day in 1991. About 220 million people worldwide have diabetes. In the United States, diabetes disproportionately affects African Americans and Latinos.
