Gosh this has happened to me. I am in the UK. As well as a massage I have been refused certain beauty treatments and a tattoo. Which is all against the law in the UK under the 2010 Equal Opportunities act.I had a doctors letter! But to do anything about it, apart from what I did which was to send a letter, drafted for me by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which got me nowhere. As to pursue any of it further I would have had to have money to fight it or someone backing me .
What this poor woman experienced were bad, uneducated therapists. Most massage courses include a course about pathology. A properly educated therapist would know there is no issue with performing massage on a client who is HIV positive, not in and of itself. Massage is beneficial for those who are positive as it is for the rest of the populace.
As a licensed massage therapist and business owner, I’m appalled by the actions of the therapist and the establishment which were clearly discriminatory. I hope that this doesn’t discourage other clients from getting massage therapy, or disclosing their health information in the future. Sending her love and light and hope - and a free massage if she’s ever in Brooklyn! - PRESS Modern Massage in NYC.
I agree, Michelle. Still, though, it's very difficult for the customer in such a situation.
This is why education is so important even if we get 1 out of 10 we don't stop, we continue to make the rounds. We don't give in to ignorants, Most of the time you get there attention if it hits them in the wallet, but that is a start then change there thinking and that will reflect the science that we have been speaking about all the time .
I think that panic sets in for many a health and well-being service provider whenever one of a multitude of health conditions / illnesses is mentioned. To be told that she needed a doctor's consent clearly shows panic because it clearly doesn't make sense.

Inexcusable!! I guess she didn't pay attention in that part of the class. Maybe better she didn't touch you, there is no telling what else she missed. So sorry anyone in this day and time isn't educated about HIV and AIDS. What she should be concerned about are the people who aren't honest. I go out of my way to be kind when a patient discloses this because I know how much discrimination they still experience
