This is very true and feels validating even though so many of us who have been through treatment already know it to be true. I just had my 10 year cancerversary 4 days ago. I was diagnosed at 34 with a rare and super aggressive breast cancer. I can’t really celebrate my 10 years because I’m nearly certain that my cancer has returned. I just haven’t been able to get the imaging and biopsy to confirm it. My previous chemo regimen aged me immediately. At 34, I felt like I was pushing 60.
I'm going thru chemo treatment right now, stage 3 colorectal cancer. I live alone and am 54. Started chemo 10 days ago, ended at the ER twice. I received a general sheet, by category, of things to eat and not to. My face is red and burns, as expected. What I don't understand is that they don't monitor what I'm eating, or anything at all. At times I feel completely normal and "smile", and it only last a few minutes. I haven't found any new developments in cancer treatment, honestly.
I'm 72, Had surgery to remove part of tonsil December 2019 and 100 min of radiation in 5 treatments in a clinical trial January 2020. In recent months have missed 5 doc appts because of confusion. Then missed correct day as in my mind the month was Feb. Numerous other cognitive expls,+walking, balance
I agree totally with this article. I had cancer at 26 and now at age 50 feel like my life is nearly over. The intense cancer treatment I had always made me feel old before my time and as I've aged it has become more apparent. My treatment left me with stomach issues which have never been treated correctly. I was given NSAIDs and SSRIs for it for years which never helped and caused me mental issues. My weight loss is under BMI now despite eating right all the time.
I'm in treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer. I'm only 42 and doctors like my chance of beating this and living a long time but I do wonder what I'm going to look like after all the hormone and radiation therapies coming my way. They don't really answer the question about my long-term outlook.
I just surpassed my 40th year since Dx at age 10 for ALL. I am wondering if there is any research or data gathered to compare current health concerns with other survivors? I have had to seek pain management about 20 years ago for back related issues—including a syrinx that was probably the result of a bad lumbar puncture. There are a few more issues as well. Any information you can share is appreciated.
