Fourteen manufacturers of cough and cold syrups voluntarily pulled their infant medicines off shelves today. The products include Johnson & Johnson’s Pediacare Infant Drops, Tylenol Concentrated Infants Drops, Wyeth’s Dimetapp Decongestant Infant Drops, Novartis’ Triaminic Infant & Toddler Thin Strips and Prestige Brands Holdings’ Little Colds Decongestant Plus Cough.
Complaints were filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claiming a lack of proof that these over-the-counter medicines actually treat ailments and that they may be harmful to infants which can lead to accidental overdosing and in some cases death. Next week, the FDA will have a two-day hearing about the efficacy and safety of these products.
