Vaccine May One Day Treat High Blood Pressure

A vaccine that works to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure may one day be used to replace current blood pressure medications, according to a new study in the UK medical journal, The Lancet.

Researchers in Switzerland are working on developing the vaccine, which would only need to be taken two or three times a year by patients managing high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

According to the researchers, many people have trouble adhering to daily blood pressure medication regimens—a problem that the vaccine could help to solve.

Studies have shown that more than 40 percent of African Americans have high blood pressure. Visit the American Heart Association’s website to learn more about treatments, as well as lifestyle changes that can help you manage hypertension.
