How Older Diabetics Can Keep Mobile

Elderly people living with diabetes may be more likely to develop problems walking or performing daily tasks that can limit their independence, according to a recent study.

The study of more than 800 adults aged 65 and older found that those with diabetes had a higher chance of having difficulties performing basic tasks, such as bathing, climbing stairs, dressing and walking. Almost half of those with diabetes used a cane, walker or other mobility aid, compared with about 30 percent who did not have diabetes.

As diabetes disproportionately affects African Americans, it is important to speak to your doctor about steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing the disease. Diabetic patients should talk to their doctors about exercises, including strength training techniques that can both help regulate blood sugar and increase mobility.
