Nearly 700 Meds in Development for African-Americans
A report released last week showed that almost 700 new medications are being developed to treat diseases that disproportionately affect black people. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America issued the report in Mississippi, the U.S. state with the largest black population.
The 691 one medicines include 229 drugs for cancers that disproportionately affect black people; 114 for cardiovascular disease; 95 for diabetes; 77 for respiratory disorders, including asthma; and, 67 drugs for HIV infection treatment.
There are also drugs in development that will address kidney disease, obesity, glaucoma and sickle cell disease.
