Keep Your Kidneys!

One fourth of African Americans suffering from chronic kidney disease as a result of high blood pressure experienced further kidney failure even when they adhered to the recommended treatment, according to a National Institutes of Health study published in the April 28 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK)—the largest and longest of its kind—followed 750 African Americans from 2002 to 2007 and revealed that 25 percent of participants currently on the best available kidney treatment either lost half of their kidney function or suffered end-stage renal disease, also known as kidney failure.

But these conditions are often preventable. To learn how to keep your kidneys going strong into old age, visit the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases by clicking here.
