When it comes to staying healthy, entertainer Nick Cannon is just like any other concerned father who wants to protect himself and his family from the influenza virus. To help others do the same, Cannon teamed with Novartis Consumer Health, Inc. to announce the launch of the Theraflu Fluprint program. The company makes Theraflu and will also donate up to $100,000 to Families Fighting Flu, a national nonprofit organization that helps people in need prepare for the seasonal scourge.

The Theraflu Fluprint program follows a five-step action plan that engages consumers with a number of educational resources that include a cold and flu symptom kit, a quiz to test their knowledge about colds and the flu and offers details about where they can go to get vaccinated and find information about over-the-counter treatments.

“A few years ago, I came down with the flu while filming a TV show,” Cannon says. “I was already nervous, and as they say, ’the show must go on,’ but having the flu during that time made it worse.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year flu-related complications force more than 200,000 Americans into hospital beds.

The CDC stresses that the flu is different from a cold. Flu symptoms strike suddenly, while colds come on gradually, with typically milder symptoms. In addition, unlike the flu, colds don’t generally lead to hospitalizations, or cause serious health problems, such as pneumonia and bacterial infections.
