Coffee Produces Conflicting Results

Two recent studies have created a conflicting picture of the health implications of drinking coffee. One study suggested that caffeine may lower the risk of ovarian cancer; another study published in a separate medical journal showed that it doubled the chance of miscarriage.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School examined health data on more than 121,000 women ages 30-35 and found a lower risk of ovarian cancer with increased caffeine intake. Researchers at Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research, however, discovered that women who drink two or more cups of coffee per day are twice as likely as women who avoid caffeine to have a miscarriage.
