An alliance of renowned organizations has launched the EastAfrican Community Medicines Registration Harmonization Project to improveaccess to quality HIV drugs in East Africa, UNAIDS reports. The project hopesto tackle challenges such as poor finances, insufficient infrastructure, weakmedicine legislation and drawn-out drug approval processes. It will also encouragelocal production of meds and African control of development investments.Currently, 80 percent of antiretrovirals in Africa come from abroad, and twothirds of all AIDS expenditures in Africa come from outside sources. The allianceincludes the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, the World HealthOrganization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank, the U.K.Department for International Development and the Clinton Health AccessInitiative.
