With the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) under review by the U.S. Supreme Court, AIDS activists have good reason to hope for a favorable ruling, the Washington Post reports. HIV-positive people benefit from the ACA in two major ways. First, the law expands Medicaid coverage so that those with low incomes gain earlier access to treatment—as opposed to waiting until they’re sick enough to be considered disabled, as required by current policies. Second, the ACA removes the limits on pre-existing conditions that have blocked people with HIV from purchasing private insurance. The court could rule as early as June.
