Youth Suicide Rates Soar

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the suicide rate among youth (10-24) rose 8 percent (4, 599 deaths) in 2004—the biggest increase in the past 15 years. The group with the highest spike was girls ages 10-14, who had a 72 percent upsurge. Although the study did not offer concrete explanations for their findings, some experts speculate that the drop in antidepressant use that year may have played a factor. In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required drug manufacturers to place labels warning consumers that the drugs may cause suicidal thoughts in children.
