Vision Loss in Black Diabetics

African Americans who have type I diabetes have a high risk of vision loss, according to a new study. Researchers examined 500 African Americans with type I diabetes over the course of 6 years and found that 4.3 percent of the patients developed visual loss in their better eye, while almost 10 percent had doubling of the visual angle in their better eye. Researchers say that close monitoring of damage to the retina in African American diabetics is important for catching and preventing severe vision loss.
