Diabetes Risk High in Obese Young Adults

People who are obese (body mass index over 30) at the age of 18 are more likely than not to develop type II diabetes at some point in their lives, according to a new study. Obese men had a 50.1 percent chance of developing the disease, while obese women had a 57.3 percent risk. The study also found that 18 year olds who were not obese but were overweight (body mass index 25 – 29.9) had about a 30 – 35 percent lifetime risk of developing diabetes. Young adults who are overweight should talk to their doctors about healthy ways to lose weight and improve their health.
