African American women with the sickle cell trait are more likely to have multiple births than women who do not have it, and should receive special prenatal care in order to detect the trait early, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. Though they found that women who were sickle cell carriers were less likely to deliver prematurely, they were 94 percent more likely to be carrying multiple fetuses.
