Update: Pregnant Women and Fish

Last week, RH reported that groups including National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, were endorsing that pregnant and nursing women need to eat more fish. But some members of the coalition are speaking out about the recommendations, citing their anger at the lack of warnings about high-mercury fish such as swordfish, shark, king mackerel and tilefish and the organization’s work being funded by the National Fisheries Institute. Studies have shown that exposure to mercury can harm fetuses and children.

The disgruntled members stress that mothers can eat no more than 12 oz. per week of low-mercury fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines because it can play a crucial role in babies’ brain function, growth and development.
