Exercise Cuts Risk of Premature Birth

Women who are active during their pregnancy may have a better chance of having a full-term delivery, says a new Danish study. Of the 87,000 participants, one third of the women who engaged in such activities as hiking, dancing or walking in either early- or late-stage pregnancy were less likely to give birth prematurely than pregnant women who did not.

Experts say that African-American women are three times more likely to give birth prematurely than white women. Some studies suggest that genetics and lack of access to prenatal care may play factors in those statistics.

Read more in RH’s feature “On Fertile Ground,” about pregnancy issues that black women face.
